History of Lacrosse in the CSRA
In the Fall of 1989, the Aiken-Augusta LC was founded at Westside High School by Curt Gary
with the help of two dedicated USC Aiken students, David McLaughlin and Frank Casucci.
With the support of Mrs. Dorothy McLaughlin, David's mother, a group of twelve members
began practice.  The original players were Curt Gary, David McLaughlin, Frabk Caucci, Bob
Braun, Steve Boe, Jim "Ninja-man" Fannery, Dan "Goo-man" Mack, Ernie Fisco, Kevin
"Kaiser" Shively, Thomas "Beer nuts" Bernatski, "Jiffy-pop" Jeff and Billy "the nurse".

By the Spring of 1990, with the addition of many new players, we became competitive.  Our
first game ever was a loss to USC in Columbia 19-12.  We lost the next six games finishing
0-7 with most games being close.  During Fall-ball, we turned our year around with a winning
record of 4-3 with our first victory being over Furman LC at Westside HS.  Competition
continued Spring and Fall against Atlanta, Asheville, Charleston, Charlotte, Birmingham,
Cape Fear-Wilmington, Savannah, Fort Bragg, Fort Benning and Camp LeJune with games
against many area college clubs.

When Westside began the long awaited renovation of its athletic facilities we moved our
lacrosse operations to Evans and changed our name to Columbia County Lacrosse.  A great
following of young and talented high school lacrosse players has swelled our membership to
over 200 including girls and youth players.
